This map of the area between 26th and 43rd Streets around Fifth Avenue shows the relationship between the south end of the Common Lands and the 1811 grid. It indicates that Middle Road ran diagonally from about 28th to 40th Street, where it changed course to align with Fifth Avenue. This map of 1872 also shows the addition of Madison and Lexington Avenues, while although not part of the 1811 plan, adhered to its geometric order.
