After the great fire of 1835, the Merchants’ Exchange (1836–41) was rebuilt on the same site on a grander scale. Designed by Isaiah Rogers, the building featured a dome and monumental colonnade on Wall Street. As the primary site of city land auctions, the pulse of the New York’s real estate market continued to beat here until the late 19th century. Modified over time, the building survives at 55 Wall Street.
