The outcroppings and rusticity of the area around the Commissioners’s Harlem Square and of Mount Morris Parks is evident in this photograph of 1894 of a lot bounded by Fifth Avenue and 118th Street. Given the forbidding cost of the leveling the block, frame structures have been built atop these boulders. The watch tower of Mount Morris Park is visible in the background.
